Shark Week

We heard on the news that a cat shark was stollen from an aquarium in England. So the boys wanted to see pictures of a catshark. When we did a google search...we found these! We laughed so hard when we saw this one.Patrick insisted that we post this stuffed cat shark on our blog.A beautiful cat shark in the Monterey Bay Aquarium (aw! we miss that aquarium!)

Karioconcertke

When I found out Air Supply was going to be at the Hard Rock Biloxi--I secretly hoped to go but then I didn't think anyone would want to go with me. Jim would not be caught going to that concert. So when Sue mentioned an interest in going to the concert, I jumped and said "let's go!" Sue was very curious about the demographics of the concert goers. I had to relive the 80's again without the angst of a first breakup. So we're thinking, we'll be with a bunch of middle aged fans probably mostly women. Were we wrong! First the place was packed--more packed than the Gipsy Kings concert Maribel and I attended a couple of months ago. The age range--14year old teens - 65 something retirees. And there were about equal number of men in the audience and they didn't look like they were forced into going by their wives or girlfriends!! They were singing along! Not just them, the whole place was singing along. It was one huge karioke fest!! The scary part, I sang the whole concert as well . Who knew I knew all the words but then again back in the 80s when Bradford Lipetz broke my heart (hu hu hu), I'd gather up my Air Supply cassette tapes and play them over and over again--nothin' like a good cry back then. Though the resulting swollen mole people eyes afterwards was no fun. But I knew someday I would look back and laugh at that crying fest. And sure enough, on Friday night I laughed and sang the whole night. Graham and Russell sang pretty well for a couple of middle aged soft rockers. Russell's black crazy hair is gone replaced by what I thought was blond hair but Sue pointed out that it was white and straightened. He still wears the funky outfits but more tattoos. Graham looks a little older--not surgically enhanced either. And only that night did I realize he's a left handed guitarist. The rest of the band, (new members) keyboardist, drummer and bass guitarist were all eye candy!! I'm not kidding! Hmmm..I wonder perhaps the reason for the younger crowd.
Sue and John were worried that I'd go into labor. I was only standing on top of the chair for half of the concert...plus I took my shoes off. Barefeet and pregnant but not in the kitchen! It was a fun night! I forgot the aches and pains of carrying a big baby but it took me three days to recoup because the following day all the aches came back. But hey! it's better than the achy breaky heartache of the 80s.

Thank you Prof. Pausch

A very wise mentor recommended "The Last Lecture" to me a few months ago. It is one of the best books I've read. The author, Randy Pausch, just passed away from pancreatic cancer at the young age of 47 leaving a wife and three young kids...and leaving us a little book full of life lessons. I highly recommend it. If you don't have time to read it, check out the lecture (on You Tube) that inspired the book, or read just a handful of bullet points from his book. He said..in life we can be either a "Tigger" or an "Eeyore"--its' a choice.
Thank you Chris for introducing me to him!

FROM RANDY PAUSCH'S 'LAST LECTURE'

-Never underestimate the importance of having fun. I'm dying and I'm having fun. And I'm going to keep having fun every day because there's no other way to play it.

-Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

-No one is pure evil. Find the best in everybody. Wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you.

-Brick walls are there for a reason. They are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The brick walls are there to stop people who don't want it badly enough.

-It is not about achieving your dreams but living your life. If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself. The dreams will come to you.

-We can't change the cards we're dealt, just how we play the hand.

Bam!

A group of us went to try out this meal preparation joint in Mobile and made a girls' night out of it. In less than 90 minutes, I had 36 servings of 8 different dishes all done and ready to be stored in the freezer.
They served us wine and bottled water and a featured dish for next month which was chicken paella. Here's Sandra, Kelly and I having a sample.Blake & Kristen concentrating...1/8 teaspoon or 1/4 teaspoon of chile powder. I had to say the ingredients out loud so I don't get confused. Carrie was preparing coconut shrimp and realized at the end that she forgot to put the shrimp.A photo op infront of the Honey Orange Chicken and Hawaiian Chicken Prep Bar
The best part of it all...no dishes to wash or counters to clean.
It was a fun evening out!

My brother finally sent me an updated photo of my nieces. Kahlia (5)is entering kindergarten in the fall and Kaylie (2) as Anthony reports is holy terror---a typical two. We can't wait 'till we live on the same coast again so we can visit them and cousin Sean more often.

Power Week! Power Blast!

Today concludes our power week at St. Paul's Vacation Bible School. We've had a really fun week of bible stories and science experiments. Jill and I taught the" Bunsen Burners"- 14 kids (5-6 years old). Teaching is definitely a calling and I admire the teachers who do teach in schools full time--geez even part time. Jill and I were exhausted by the end of the week. I don't know how school teachers do it. However, watching the kids sing on stage and "get the lessons"---it's pretty darn rewarding and the surprise hugs too are worth the work.

We had a total of 200 kids attend this week! The largest attendance of the three VBS we participated in this summer.

The Dolphin

Ronan learned how to "swim" from yours truly--the nonswimmer. We just hung around the pool a lot this summer and he learned from playing in the water and watching Patrick swim. He enjoys the water so much--as most kids do. He and Patrick will start "official" swimming lessons from da professionals when they return from Ireland. So fun to watch him play and swim.

Countdown to Eire!

Last time we were in Ireland--the Dolan clan hiked the Cuilcagh mountain. This time, the clan is heading back for Mickey and Kathleen's wedding, Sean David's baptism and a family reunion. Mammy will be so happy to see everyone...too bad I'm too far along in the pregnancy to travel internationally. The boys are excited to see Nana. You can see the view of the Cuilcagh from Mammy's house. It is so pretty!

The proof

31 weeks and still growing!!! I'm afraid by September I won't be so upright. I'd be more like tortoise...an enormous tortoise!

Power Lab

It's the last Vacation Bible School of the summer for us. I'll be teaching the kindergartners this week while Ronan and Patrick attend their classes in different labs. We're all excited to learn some bible stories and doing "experiments". Stay tuned for fun photos to follow up soon!

30 weeks down 8-10 to go!!

What a difference a week makes! Last week, I didn't think I could make it to 40 weeks. I must have had a surge in relaxin hormone because all my joints were achy. But all is better now. The aches are tolerable and energy level is good. My friend Jennifer, introduced me to her shiatsu back massager chair pad. It so awesome that when I got home, I ordered one from Amazon. I'm sure Jim is relieved that I'm not demanding back massages anymore. My thighs are a frightning sight and unfortunately have to subject the public to its viewing because the boys and I have been swimming quite a bit. The water does wonders for my back and I'm able to get some exercise that way. I can no longer do the stationary bike, elliptical machine or even the threadmill for fear of falling down on my giant belly. The contractions have gone down in frequency, heartburn is back but me love my Nexium, not much change with the insomnia. I passed my 3 hour glucose tolerance test--they should really rename that as glucose torture test. I got another ultrasound of Gabriel and he is already 3lbs 11 oz!! He maybe working on coming out as a 10 pounder (yikes!), we'll see. Patrick was 8lbs15oz (really 9lbs), Ronan 9lbs 7 oz (round that to 9.5lbs) They'll probably do another ultrasound at 37 weeks to make sure he's not too big for a regular delivery. That is all the pregnancy babble for now. I groan and hobble a lot but my spirits are good!

Independence Day

We celebrated Independence Day grillin' at home with our neighbors. The kids wanted to do their own fireworks so Jim took them to the fireworks stand and bought a whole bunch. It was nice to just hang out with the neighbors until 11pm.

The boys were so proud of their "ordnances".

They lit the fireworks in the middle of the street and run like mad up the driveway.

Scott and Mark lighting one of the artillery shells. Those were pretty cool stuff!
Ooohs and aaahhhss!!

Gabriel in 10 seconds

A very quick kodak moment during Gabriel's echocardiogram. According to the cardiologist, he's got a perfect heart! I think so too! Press the pause button on middle if you want to see a freeze frame. This was taken a month ago. It takes a little while to download.

Kung Fu Pandas

Ronan started martial arts class this week. He is just as serious of a little dragon as Patrick was when he started at the same age. Luckily their classes are on the same day and right after each other so I only have to drive to the studio twice a week, which by the way is in Vancleave now instead of just a mile from our house.

Ronan and Boyd in Little Dragon Class

30 situps! and 10 pushups! I can't even do that.

Sean David Dolan

Oh! my beautiful nephew!! He is now one year old and I haven't met him yet! A very classic Dolan boy shot. Have fun running after the sheep and chicken and ducks and cows in Ireland next month with Ronan and Patrick!!

Nuts for Nuts on Clark

Laurie introduced me to Nuts on Clark the first time she visited us here in Mississippi. They have DA BEST caramel corn in the UNIVERSE. The problem is you can only get it online or in Chicago. A couple of weeks ago, she was in Chicago visiting her brother and family and she sent me a huge box of caramel corn along with a CD of her nephew, Sean's, band. If you're ever in Chicago, or even in O'Hare airport---you must treat yourself to some.

Thank you Laurie for the treats!!

God Bless, Dr. Stephen!

Our friend Stephen is leaving today for a six month deployment. We are proud of you Stephen and thank you for going to help our young men and women come back home to their families alive. We will keep you in our prayers for your safety while there and for your safe return home to Jenni and the kids. Thank you for your family's sacrifice and for serving our country. My boys and I will keep an eye on your beautiful family.
We love you!

Yadiyadiya

If I had my way, I would be happily visiting friends and family in San Francisco . Oh...just about now, I would be thrilled to put on a jacket and jeans and get reunited with Ocean Beach and Baker Beach in the freezing SF summer weather. But about a month ago when I started getting as big as Shamu and feeling the "other joys" of pregnancy---backache, SI joint pain, insomnia, fatigue, backache, backache backache, I realized I would have to postpone my trip to SF until after Gabriel's born. A little bit of me still hoped maybe it will get better and I can still go. Sadly no..so the last week and a half, I've been pouting, and feeling angry--a little teary (sometimes a lot)...a tantrum almost brewing. It's been almost two years since I've been back "home" so I really really miss my friends, family and my quirky city. I miss my little nieces Kaylie and Khalia and have not even met my new nephew Sean David. Even Patrick has been asking when we're going back to San Francisco to visit papa and go to the museums. So in the midst of my daily domestic activities here, I'd sulk and even wallow in my disappointment and if I could physically do it I'd throw myself on the floor and scream whine like a two year old--boy...a sight that would be.
The last six + years, my kids have been my reality check gauge. This past weekend, Gabriel whacked me out of my sulking party. I've been having occasional Braxton Hicks contractions--the typical stuff for those entering the final trimester. But by Sunday night, I was having 4-5 mild to moderate contractions every hour and at rest. I also noticed Gabriel was not moving as much. I hardly got any sleep because of a little worry and just from being so uncomfortable. When I called L&D the following day, they made me come to the hospital where I got hooked up to a tocometer for 4.5 hours. Gabriel is fine, his heart rate never went down below the 140s but my contractions were very frequent. Gabriel moved all over the place as if there's a party in my womb. Dr. Moore did couple of tests and all were NEGATIVE for preterm labor. No cervical dilation, just a little effacement which is normal at this time. Basically he just told me to make sure I keep hydrated and to SLOW DOWN and take it easy. Slow down?!?! I thought I was slowing down already. Hello!?! I'm postponing SF trip and missing out on the Ireland trip in August! And wait, compared to all the stuff I was doing during the second trimester, I've slowed down a bit.
I get it Gabriel...I need to go slower. I'll have no choice now anyway. My posse here has also become my slow-down police. Thanks Girls!
So there...the sulking party is over. SF will still be there when I'm not so Shamu-size. And in the words of my wise yoga teacher .."BE HERE NOW'...wherever you are, there you be.
